Defining Inspiration Porn: Objectifying Disability in Media

At Mobility Trust we offer financial services specifically for people living with physical disabilities. We aim to elevate the lives of our community, to inspire others, to promote accessibility for all. Upon listening to disabled thought leaders, such as the late Stella Young (featured), we want to ensure we're not objectifying disabled people in the process.

Many times prominent stories of disability are reduced to a person's success 'despite' their disabilities. Their stories are told to uplift and inspire so when you look at your own life, you think 'hey it could be worse, I could be that person.' Young has labeled this as "Inspiration Porn" because these uses deliberately objectify one group of people (the disabled) for the benefit of another (non disabled).

Young's argument against disabled objectification in her TEDxSydney talk is an important call to action for all companies who speak on the  disabled experience. Tap the thumbnail below to hear her hot take on 'Inspiration Porn.'
